  15. 1.    Overview
  16.  
  17. Before starting please note the following:
  18.  
  19. a. Motoring Expenses uses the mileage and dates entered when the motorist
  20. enters personal fuel data to estimate future servicing by date and mileage.
  21. b. The application may produce error messages when using new files if not
  22. enough fuel entries and servicing entries are made. It also needs servicing
  23. intervals to be entered.
  24. c. The application expects the mileage and dates to increase when fuel and
  25. servicing data is entered, otherwise errors may occur. (Mileage should not
  26. reduce for a later date!) 
  27. d. The application functions best after a number of servicing and fuel
  28. entries have been made.
  29. e. The current vehicles databases are compressed on exiting the program. 
  30. f. The databases are sorted by mileage except the reminder database which is
  31. sorted by date.

  33. Motoring expenses is an application designed to help the average motorist 
  34. keep track of his monthly motoring expenditure.  It will supply reports and statistics 
  35. and help remind the motorist of when servicing of the vehicle is due.  It can keep 
  36. track of a number of vehicles and can produce a personal fuel consumption graph.  
  37. Obviously the author can take no responsibility for any loss of data or incorrect 
  38. servicing information, the program is only an aid.  Any problems should be 
  39. reported to the author who will try and rectify the problem.

  43. 2.    Installation
  44.     
  45. The application is supplied in a zipped SIS file format which has to be 
  46. unzipped before the SIS file can be run to install the application.  The SIS file will
  47. set up the application directory and a data folder (see Folders created).
  48. The SIS file gives options to install Motoring Expenses to the c or a d drive. Please
  49. follow the instructions carefully.

  51. 3.    Opening the application
  52.  
  53. Once installed, the application can be opened by selecting  it from the 
  54. taskbar in the normal way.  The first screen will display a taskbar with four buttons 
  55. and a menu can be displayed by pressing the MENU button.   The first task on 
  56. opening is to create a new vehicle (see New vehicle)

  58. 4.    New vehicle
  59.  
  60.     The fist task is to enter a new vehicle this will create the databases required 
  61. by the application to store the data for it's various tasks.  A number of vehicles can 
  62. be entered which is useful if you use a number of vehicles.

  77. 6.    Data Files created

  79. The files created are:

  88. All these files are kept in the $:\motoring folder.

  92. 7.    Back Up
  93.  
  94.     There is a backup option which moves the above files to the backup folder 
  95. and recreates the folders in the c:\motoring folder, these recreated files contain no 
  96. records until the user starts to use the application after the backup.

  98. 8.    Help
  99.  
  100.     Pressing Shift-Control-H will bring up the help file this will close 
  101. automatically on closing the Motoring Expenses application, or it can be closed 
  102. independently.

  108. 9.    Upgrading/Reloading Motoring Expenses
  109.  
  110.     There is no need to lose any data when upgrading or reloading 
  111. Motoring Expenses. 
  112.  
  113. How to upgrade to Motoring Expenses: 
  114.  
  115. $ = drive letter c or d as appropriate
  116.  
  117. a. Remove the previous version of Motoring Expenses using the Control 
  118.    Panel.
  119. b. Install the new version of Motoring Expenses
  120. c. Check the $:\motoring folder for file called preferences BEFORE
  121.    opening the new version of Motoring Expenses for the FIRST time.
  122.    If the preferences file is present the application is now installed.
  123.    If the preferences file is missing then open the new version of 
  124.    Motoring Expenses for the first time. Enter the vehicle registration 
  125.    when prompted and re-register the program if a registered user. 
  126.    Enter any other registrations you may be using.

  130. IF UPGRADING FROM VERSION 3.5 PREVIOUS DATA CANNOT BE IMPORTED!
